Prof. Katta Mohan Girisha is a Professor of Genetics at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat. Earlier, he headed the Department of Medical Genetics at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal — a department he established at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. He is a clinician with special interest in skeletal dysplasia and prenatal and postnatal dysmorphology.
His research is focused on skeletal dysplasia, and he is a member of the International Society for Skeletal Dysplasia where he serves on the nosology group. He is a founding member and past Secretary of the Indian Academy of Medical Genetics. He also serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Medical Genetics (Associate Editor), European Journal of Human Genetics (Section Editor), Journal of Human Genetics, and Clinical Dysmorphology.
Over the last two decades, his team has played a critical role in the growth of medical genetics as a specialty in India — contributing to education, patient care, and research. His team has authored 288 peer-reviewed publications and discovered 35 new diseases and their genetic bases. He is the Principal Investigator for 12 research projects, including the Centre for Rare Disease Diagnosis, Research and Training funded by India Alliance. Eight scholars have completed their PhD under his supervision.
His team also established the first university-approved Master of Science programme in Genetic Counselling in India. He is passionate about transforming human lives through the application of genomic technologies for prevention, diagnosis, and care.
He is the founder and director of Suma Genomics Private Limited, which provides state-of-the-art genomics diagnostic services.
