Executive Summary

Distinguished neuroscientist and academic leader with over 20 years of experience investigating the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. As the Director of the Children’s Neuroscience Institute at the University of Pittsburgh, I lead a multidisciplinary NIH-funded research program focusing on RNA-binding proteins (FUS, TDP-43, Gemin5) and their roles in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and other neurodevelopmental conditions. My work integrates diverse model systems including Drosophila, patient-derived iPSCs, and mouse models to identify therapeutic targets for complex genetic diseases. With over 85 peer-reviewed publications, 25,000+ citations, and a consistent record of federal funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and many private foundations. Beyond my research, I contribute to national scientific priorities as a panel chair and reviewer for the Department of Defense (DoD) and various NIH study sections, while remaining dedicated to international collaboration and the mentorship of future scientific leaders.
